Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) is an XML-based file format for office files such as spreadsheets, text, charts, and graphics. This standard is supported by a range of office applications and companies including Arbortext, OpenOffice, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. It is currently being submitted for approval as an ISO standard. It has generated interest by governments operating large scale information networks.

An earlier version (V1.0) was published as an ISO/IEC standard in 2006: ISO/IEC 26300.

Workflow stage:
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5
Business value:
This standard protects content from being locked into an application or vendor-specific file format. It also allows users to realize the benefits of having their content in a standard XML format without changing their authoring tools.
